Collection: POLK STREET

In 1975 I was a student @ San Francisco State, in the film and photography departments. This Photo Essay was a project for my photo journalism class.  Polk Street is a Street in San Francisco California that travels northward from market Street to Beach Street, and is one of the main thoroughfares of the Polk Gulch neighborhood. Traversing through the tenderloin, Nob Hill, and Russian Hill neighborhoods. Approximately Gary Street, to Union Street.

Polk Street remains prominent for its nightlife although, prostitution and pimps are still a common site on the street. POLK ST., takes its name from former US President James K Polk.

I spent 3 months standing, or waking around asking people if it was ok to take a portrait, a few candid images but most portraits were posed.
